What is a message request and why might it matter?¶
A social platform may place messages from unfamiliar accounts into a request or filtered folder.
Evidential caution: that a message request reached the recipient in the same way as an ordinary inbox message.
What this means¶
A message request allows an account to attempt contact without an established connection, follow relationship or prior conversation.
The recipient may receive a notification, a limited preview or no obvious alert, depending on settings and platform behaviour.
The message may remain unread in a request folder, be filtered as spam, be accepted into the main inbox or be deleted.
Opening or accepting the request may create new read, seen or connection records.
Requests can be important in harassment, fraud, grooming, impersonation and unsolicited-contact investigations because they show attempted contact even where no established relationship existed.
In reports, distinguish submission of the request from delivery to the main inbox, viewing and personal awareness.
Where the issue is disputed, compare account, device, provider and surrounding contextual records before drawing a conclusion.
What to check or do next¶
- Preserve the folder, request status, sender and recipient account IDs, timestamps, preview text, notifications and any acceptance or rejection event.
- Do not open or accept a live request unnecessarily before recording its current state.
- Preserve the original source and collection method so another investigator can test the same interpretation.
Evidential limits¶
The absence of a reply does not prove that the recipient saw the request. The presence of a seen indicator may still require careful interpretation.
Operational takeaway
Preserve the request’s folder, status and account identifiers before interaction, and treat attempted contact, notification, acceptance and viewing as separate evidential events.
