What are the main limitations of a messaging screenshot?¶

A screenshot is normally partial, display-dependent and easy to detach from its source. A clear image may still omit the context, identifiers and history needed to interpret it safely.

Content and time can be incomplete¶

The visible portion may exclude earlier or later messages, attachments, reactions, edits, calls, group changes and system notices. Relative times such as “yesterday”, partial dates and local device settings can make chronology ambiguous.

Messages may have been removed before capture. The image can also show a notification, quote, forward or linked-device view rather than the underlying original message.

Appearance does not prove identity or integrity¶

Contact names may be local labels, profile images copied and stable telephone or account IDs hidden. Cropping, editing, assembly and re-saving can remove provenance; an unaltered screenshot can still present a selected or misleading extract.

Preserve the uncropped original, device, capture circumstances and surrounding conversation where possible. Seek an export, screen recording or forensic acquisition only through a controlled method that considers disappearing content and live-system effects.

Do not reject screenshots as a class. State their specific limitations and test important propositions against independent records.
