What should be preserved alongside a messaging screenshot?¶
Preserve the original image, its capture provenance, wider conversation context, stable account identifiers and any available native or device record. The visible pixels are only one representation of the communication.
Protect the source and context¶
Record who created the screenshot, capture time and zone, device, application, account and route by which it was supplied. Keep the original file before cropping, printing or re-saving.
Where safe and proportionate, preserve the application name, conversation title, telephone or username, account and group IDs, profile, status indicators, dates and surrounding messages. A controlled screen recording may show navigation and scrolling, but interaction with disappearing content or an online account can change evidence.
Gather related records¶
Retain native exports and attachments, link destinations, notification history, source-device data, linked-device information and the other participant's conversation where relevant. Recipient-side material may survive after content disappears elsewhere.
Document every interaction and transformation. If the original device or exact capture time is unavailable, record that limitation rather than reconstructing it from the image without support.

Preserve screenshot provenance, stable identities and the surrounding native conversation so the display can be traced back to its source.
