What does “delivered” mean on a messaging service?¶
“Delivered” normally means the service recorded the message reaching its defined destination. That destination may be recipient infrastructure, an account or one or more linked devices - not necessarily the intended person.
Identify the destination and time¶
On some platforms, a device must connect before delivery is recorded; on others, account infrastructure is enough. Preserve the exact indicator, message and account IDs, time and zone, service and any device context.
Sender and recipient records may show different delivery times because of interface refresh, device synchronisation or multiple linked clients. Establish the provider meaning before treating those values as conflicting.
Delivery stops short of awareness¶
A linked laptop may receive data while the phone owner is elsewhere. The account could be shared or compromised, and the device unattended.
Compare sender status with recipient-side messages, notifications, device records and provider events. Report delivery to the identified system destination; use a reply, reaction or conduct plus user attribution to support personal awareness.
The point to remember
“Delivered” is a provider-defined arrival event; name its destination and keep it separate from personal receipt, reading or understanding.
