Why might different systems show different times for the same message?¶
Different systems may timestamp different stages, use different clocks and zones, or round and convert values. A discrepancy is expected until the source and meaning of each time have been aligned.
One message produces several events¶
The sender device may record creation, the provider acceptance, and the recipient device receipt, display or sync. Queues, offline use and network delay separate those stages. Linked devices may receive the content at different times.
One source can use UTC, another local time and an export the reviewing device's settings. Inaccurate handset clocks, daylight-saving, rounding to minutes and forensic-tool conversion add further differences. Edits and restores create additional times.
Reconcile without forcing agreement¶
Preserve raw values, field names, zones, offsets, clock settings and precision. Join records by stable message and account IDs plus sequence, then identify which event each timestamp represents.
Explain residual discrepancies openly. Treat a difference as suspicious only after ordinary event-stage, zone, clock and synchronisation explanations have been evaluated.
The point to remember
Reconcile message times through their event stage, clock, zone and precision before treating differences as error or manipulation.
