Can a sent message be edited?¶

Yes, on many services. Edit windows, visible markers and retention of original text vary by product and version, so the wording displayed today may not be what recipients first saw.

Messages can exist in several states¶

An edit can change spelling, instructions, links or meaning. One device may cache an earlier version, a notification preserve its preview, and a reply quote text removed from the current message. The editing session can also differ from the original sending session.

Preserve the current message, edit marker, every available timestamp, conversation context and stable IDs. Retain screenshots, notifications, exports and recipient-side records showing earlier wording.

Prove wording and editor separately¶

An edit marker may establish change without revealing the original text, number of edits, time or user. Provider or device records may be needed where wording matters.

Distinguish the version currently displayed from earlier content supported by another source. Do not infer dishonest intent from editing alone, and do not attribute the change to the account holder without session and device evidence.

Edited-message markers define the narrower evidential proposition created by the label itself.
