What happens when a user deletes a message?¶
Deletion changes one or more representations of a message; it does not automatically remove every copy or event. The effect depends on whether the user deletes locally, requests removal for participants or clears application data.
Follow every copy¶
The other participant, a linked device, notification, screenshot, export, quotation, forward or downloaded attachment may retain content. Device databases, caches, backups and forensic remnants can survive after the message disappears from the interface.
Providers or organisational retention systems may preserve metadata or compliance copies even where readable content is unavailable.
Preserve the deletion event and state¶
Record the deletion marker, surrounding sequence, stable IDs, times, participants and connected devices before further interaction. Establish which deletion function was used and when; local deletion and removal for everyone have different scopes.
Deletion may generate a system notice and synchronise across devices. Reconnecting an offline device or restoring a backup can alter surviving evidence, so plan recovery carefully.
Attribute the deletion separately from account ownership. Report content as no longer visible in a defined source unless wider evidence proves destruction.

Treat deletion as a service-specific change to distributed copies, preserving current states and searching other devices, participants and records before concluding the message is gone.
