What are disappearing messages?¶

Disappearing messages are configured to expire after a period, view or other service condition. They are volatile within the live conversation, but may leave content or metadata elsewhere.

Viewing can change the evidence¶

The timer may apply per conversation, message type or opening event. Accessing content can start expiry, create a read state or make it vanish. Reconnecting an offline linked device can synchronise the expiry instruction and remove an older copy.

Record the service, account, device, timer, conversation settings and current state before interaction. Preserve the display and source device through a controlled method, with specialist support where necessary.

Search the distributed record¶

Sender, recipient and linked devices, notifications, screenshots, downloads, backups and forensic artefacts may retain material. Providers may hold sent, delivery, opening or expiry metadata even without readable content.

Distinguish a message configured to disappear from proof that no record survives. The feature is common for privacy and does not itself establish wrongful intent; significance depends on the surrounding conduct.
