What should be preserved about group membership, roles and permissions?¶
Preserve the historical audience and control structure alongside the messages. Content alone does not show who could see it, publish it or alter the group at the relevant time.
Capture identity, history and settings¶
Record platform, stable group or channel ID, creation details, public or private state, invitation method and description. Preserve participant telephone, username and account IDs rather than names alone.
Collect join, leave, removal, re-addition and invitation events; owners, administrators, moderators and restricted roles; and who could post, approve, delete, add members or create links. Visibility settings should show whether new members saw history, administrators alone could post, content disappeared or forwarding was restricted.
Preserve provenance without changing the group¶
Keep system messages, structured exports, audit and provider records with their source and time. A screenshot may show current membership while organisational logs supply historical actions.
Avoid removing users, revoking links or opening live settings unnecessarily, because those actions can create records or alert participants. Use specialist support for large, disputed or sensitive live groups.
