What is number porting and why can it matter to an investigation?¶
Number porting transfers a telephone number between providers while keeping the visible number unchanged. Relevant subscriber, SIM and usage records can therefore be divided across networks by date.
Map the service transition¶
Identify the donor provider, receiving provider, effective port time and any routing intermediary. Communications immediately before and after the transfer may sit in separate systems or reflect temporary interruption.
Preserve the full number and investigation period before directing preservation or acquisition enquiries. Contacting only the current provider can miss historical records.
Consider unauthorised porting¶
A legitimate customer port changes provider, not necessarily user. A fraudulent port-out can transfer control of calls and authentication messages, supporting account takeover.
Compare port requests, customer contacts, authentication, SIM and account-security events with loss of service and later activity. Porting itself establishes service movement; it does not identify the human user.
The point to remember
Check the port timeline so each provider's records are sought for the correct period and any unauthorised transfer of control is tested.
