What is a virtual or VoIP telephone number?¶

A virtual or VoIP number is provided through an internet communications service and can operate through applications, browsers, desk phones or cloud platforms without one conventional SIM and handset.

The number identifies a service account¶

It may be used across devices and locations, shared by a business or forwarded elsewhere. The displayed number is therefore weaker evidence of physical device possession or location than a direct mobile association.

Preserve international-format number, provider and intermediary, account and platform IDs, date range and forwarding configuration.

Follow internet-side records¶

Provider account, payment, login, IP, device and application data may identify control. A real person or organisation can still be linked, but that is a separate evidential chain.

Be alert to caller-ID presentation and forwarding: the number seen by a recipient need not identify the originating endpoint. Report the apparent number, underlying service and attributed user as distinct layers.
