Messaging, Social Media & Telecoms Technical Explainer

Does an SMS record prove who typed the message?

No. It may attribute the event to a handset, subscription or service route, but the human composer requires separate evidence.

Several actors can use the sending route

A shared or unlocked phone, business number, virtual-number session or web SMS service can permit another person to send. Applications can schedule or generate messages. Subscriber identity does not resolve these possibilities.

Preserve full number, message, time, SIM, IMEI, device state, surrounding conversation and any provider event. Identify whether the record came from handset storage or network data.

Build authorship around the event

Use possession and access, passcode or biometric events, location, linked accounts, knowledge in the text, related messages and witnesses. Writing style may support but rarely determine authorship.

Report that the SMS was sent through the recorded number, subscription or device, then explain the additional evidence naming the person.

The point to remember

Attribute an SMS to its technical route first and to a human composer only through device access and corroborating context.
