What does an SMS delivery report prove?¶

An SMS delivery report records a network or service-defined arrival at a destination handset, subscription or messaging system. It does not prove that the intended person saw or understood the message.

Preserve the exact status¶

Record message, number, device, delivery label, time and zone, network and collection source. The meaning can depend on handset, provider and implementation, so do not infer it from a symbol alone.

A shared, lost or unattended device can receive the message and generate a notification without personal awareness. Conversely, absent reporting may reflect unsupported, disabled or delayed status rather than non-delivery.

Seek evidence of awareness¶

Compare handset and network records. Replies, later references, witness evidence or consequential conduct may support receipt and knowledge once the relevant device user is identified.

Use wording that the service recorded delivery, preserving personal reading as a separate conclusion.
