What is an MMS and how does it differ from SMS?¶

MMS is a multimedia messaging service carrying images, audio, video or richer structured content through delivery processes that may differ from SMS. A handset can display both in one app, hiding the technical distinction.

Content and attachment records separate¶

An MMS can contain text, sender and recipient, times, status and media. Attachments may be downloaded separately, cached, represented by thumbnails or stored in application folders. Provider data may record transmission without retaining readable media.

Preserve the original device and message, attachment files, hashes where available, thumbnails, names, times and sender information. Compare downloads, photo libraries, backups and recipient copies.

Interpret each evidential layer¶

Screenshots can omit underlying media details. Provider and handset retention can differ, and the apparent sender still does not identify the human author automatically.
