Can one messaging account be active on several devices?¶
Yes. A messaging account can be active through several devices or sessions at once, and different endpoints may send, receive, display or synchronise different parts of the same account history.
One account can produce several timelines¶
A phone may receive a message while a desktop session sends the reply. One endpoint may show a read receipt, edit or deletion before another synchronises. A newly linked device may acquire only recent content, while an older endpoint retains material no longer visible elsewhere.
These differences are evidence about service behaviour and timing, not automatically signs that a record is false. Preserve the device and session identifiers, link history, application data, last-active values and time bases needed to compare them.
Attribute events below account level where possible¶
Account records can establish that the service identity was active. Device artefacts, browser records, session metadata, network information and physical access evidence may narrow an event to a particular endpoint and user.
Avoid reporting that a seized phone sent a message when the evidence establishes only account-level activity. Other active sessions may have continued to act while that phone was unused or elsewhere; linked or web devices may send independently.
Where the originating endpoint cannot be resolved, retain that limitation. An accurate account-level conclusion is stronger than an unsupported device or personal attribution.
The point to remember
Build account activity from the separate timelines of its devices and sessions, and attribute each event only as specifically as the evidence permits.
