Could a thumbnail or preview have been generated automatically?¶

Yes. Messaging applications and operating systems can generate or retrieve previews during receipt, synchronisation, indexing or notification handling, without deliberate opening by a person.

Processing can happen in the background¶

Automatic media download may fetch an attachment and create a thumbnail. An application can prepare a conversation view, the operating system can index images, and a gallery or cloud service can generate its own derivative. A notification may display content before the user enters the chat.

Link previews involve a related distinction: the application, a device or a provider-side service may retrieve page information automatically. The next card explains what a link preview can prove.

Creation and access times can reflect background processing, later synchronisation or examination rather than the first human view. Relevant behaviour depends on application version, device settings, connectivity and the artefact's storage location.

Separate processing from awareness¶

Preserve the preview, related message, original file if available, download state, notification and synchronisation settings, file path and timestamps. Seek stronger interaction evidence such as full-viewer use, navigation, zooming, editing, saving, forwarding, screenshots or conversation demonstrating knowledge.

The preview supports that a system processed a representation of the content. A conclusion that a named person intentionally viewed it requires more.
