Are messaging calls recorded by default?

Do not assume so. A service can retain call-event metadata without creating a retrievable audio or video recording of the conversation.

A call record and a recording are different outputs

The ordinary call log may preserve accounts, direction, status, times and duration. Actual content requires a recording process, which might be a built-in feature, an organisational configuration, screen-recording software, another application or an external device.

Behaviour varies by service, account type, settings and period. A recording indicator or consent notice can support that a process started, but the resulting file and audit trail remain separate evidence. Absence of a local file does not necessarily show that no organisational or participant copy exists.

Find and authenticate the content file

Preserve recording controls, notices, meeting settings and audit events. Search relevant devices, downloads, meeting folders, cloud storage and collaboration accounts. If a file is found, retain its original form and establish creator, time, duration, completeness, edits and collection history.

A call record alone cannot supply the spoken content. If no recording is recovered, report the event metadata and any evidence that recording was enabled without asserting what was said.

The point to remember

Establish recording through a feature, audit event and preserved content file; never infer stored audio or video merely from a messaging call log.
