What is cell-site data?¶
Cell-site data is information showing how a mobile device or subscription connected to the mobile network.

A phone communicates with nearby network equipment to make calls, send messages and use mobile data.
Provider records may identify the cell site and sector used during a particular event.
This can help place the device within a broad service area.
The coverage area can vary with terrain, buildings, network load, antenna direction, weather, device behaviour and network design.
A device may connect to a site that is not the geographically closest.
Different events may also produce different records.
A call, SMS and data session may each be logged in different ways.
Cell-site evidence is strongest when combined with CCTV, travel records, Wi-Fi, app location, witnesses and other movement evidence.
