What is the difference between GPS, Wi-Fi and cell-site location?¶
GPS, Wi-Fi and cell-site records all help estimate location, but they work differently.
What this means¶
GPS uses signals from satellites to calculate the device’s position.
It can be precise, especially outdoors with a clear view of the sky.
But accuracy can reduce indoors, underground, between tall buildings or where the device has limited signal.
Wi-Fi location uses nearby wireless networks.
The device or service compares visible access points with databases of known locations.
This can work well indoors, but it depends on the accuracy and currency of those databases.
Cell-site location is based on the mobile-network infrastructure used by the device.
It usually places the device within a broader area rather than at an exact point.
Network load, terrain, antenna direction and building structure can all affect the connection.
Modern devices often combine several sources.
An app may receive one estimated location produced from GPS, Wi-Fi, cell-site and sensors.
Also remember that location identifies the device or account, not automatically the human user.

- Investigators should not treat all coordinates as equally reliable.
- Ask which method produced the record, what accuracy estimate was recorded and whether the device was moving.
