Could location data be inaccurate?¶
Yes. Mobile location data can be inaccurate.
What this means¶
The level of error depends on the source, environment and device conditions.
GPS may be affected by buildings, tunnels, indoor use, poor satellite visibility or reflected signals.
Wi-Fi location depends on databases that may contain moved, renamed or wrongly mapped access points.
Cell-site records provide broad network areas rather than exact positions.
Apps may also record stale or cached locations.
A location point may reflect the last known position rather than the device’s position at that exact moment.
The timestamp may record when the app saved the data, when the location was calculated or when it synchronised.
These are not always the same event.
Some records include an accuracy estimate.
That figure should be preserved and considered.
GPS, Wi-Fi, cell-site, photographs, map use, CCTV and transactions may support or challenge each other.
Movement patterns can also reveal impossible jumps or stale readings.
The operational takeaway is: location data is an estimate, not an infallible point. Identify the source, accuracy, timestamp meaning and surrounding evidence before relying on it.
