What is an IMSI and what can it tell me?¶

An IMSI identifies a subscriber identity used by a mobile network, normally through a SIM or eSIM profile. It is not the handset, telephone number or subscriber's name.

Use it to track the network identity¶

Networks use the IMSI during authentication and service. Provider or specialist records can show which handset identifier, service event or number was associated with that identity at a particular time. The same IMSI across different IMEIs may indicate movement between handsets; different IMSIs on one IMEI may show multiple subscriptions using the hardware.

These patterns are investigative leads whose timing and source matter. Record what system captured the IMSI, the event involved and all associated identifiers.

Subscription is not human use¶

The underlying subscription may be registered to a business, family member or other person while someone else carries the SIM. Devices can be shared, borrowed or stolen. IMSI evidence therefore supports network linkage and chronology, not personal responsibility on its own.

Correlate provider records with handset evidence, accounts, possession and conduct. ICCID identifies the particular SIM card or eSIM profile and can help explain replacements or reissues around the same subscription.
