Should I switch the device off?¶

Do not switch a mobile device off by default. Compare the risk of losing live access with the risk of leaving a powered, connected system able to change.

Power loss can close an evidential opportunity¶

Shutdown or restart may relock encrypted storage, end sessions and erase memory-resident information. An unlocked phone can become substantially harder to access. If the device is already off, powering it on can likewise change records, connect to networks and demand unavailable credentials.

Record current power, lock state, display, battery and connectivity before deciding. An overheating or damaged battery presents a safety issue that takes priority.

Remaining powered also carries risk¶

Messages may arrive, applications synchronise, remote deletion occur, the screen lock or the battery fail. Maintaining power, managing connectivity and preserving unlocked state require device-specific, authorised steps rather than improvisation.

Seek urgent specialist guidance for live, unlocked, encrypted or volatile devices and document the competing risks, advice and action. An unlocked phone is valuable because of its current state, not permission to browse it.
