Why does the device model and operating-system version matter?¶

They determine hardware security, features, data formats and which preservation or acquisition methods may work.

Small version differences can change evidence¶

Updates alter permissions, logs, backups, notifications, encryption and application databases. Security patches can close a specialist access method. Android manufacturer customisation adds different settings, apps and storage paths even on the same underlying version.

Model identifies capabilities such as dual SIM, eSIM, memory cards, secure hardware, sensors and network interfaces. Two phones with similar appearance may therefore behave differently.

Preserve the relevant configuration¶

Record exact model number, operating-system version and visible patch level without updating or restarting simply to obtain them. An update itself can migrate data, create timestamps and change access compatibility.

Specialists should interpret available and missing artefacts against that configuration; no provider or tool can promise the same result from every handset. Device encryption is one mechanism whose behaviour depends on the platform state.
