Can data remain after a factory reset?¶

Possibly, but modern encryption often makes previous local user data inaccessible after reset even if physical storage fragments remain.

Local recovery depends on the device¶

Reset commonly removes encryption keys. Older handsets, removable cards, incomplete resets and unusual storage may behave differently, so only specialist assessment can establish what is recoverable. Do not configure, restore or power a reset handset merely to test it; that creates new records and overwrite.

External evidence often offers the better route¶

Cloud backups, app-provider logs, messages, network records and linked devices may survive. Setup activity, new accounts, fresh installations, trusted-device changes and security alerts can also establish reset timing and subsequent use.

Ask when reset occurred, who controlled the phone and what accounts synchronised. Do not promise deleted data recovery or reduce the enquiry to residual files.
