Mobile Devices & Apps Technical Explainer

Can the same app account be used on several devices?

Yes. Activity attributed to an account may originate from any authorised phone, tablet, computer, browser or other session rather than the handset being examined.

Synchronisation spreads records

Messages, uploads, deletions and settings can appear across devices with different local timestamps and notification states. Some services list trusted devices or concurrent sessions; old, lost, sold or shared devices may remain listed after use ends.

Attribute the event to a session

Preserve login history, session IDs, device identifiers, installation IDs, network addresses, notification tokens and local databases. Compare timing to identify which device created the action rather than merely synchronised it.

Then connect that device and session to a person through possession, location and access. One account across devices does not mean the account holder personally operated each one.

Key takeaway

Resolve account activity to the relevant session and device before moving from service identity to human attribution.
