Can several accounts be used in the same app?¶
Yes. Many applications allow several accounts to be used on the same device.
What this means¶
A user may switch between personal and work accounts, several social-media profiles, multiple email addresses or different messaging identities.
Some apps show all accounts together.
Others require the user to switch profiles or sign out and back in.
Separate accounts may also remain cached even after one is no longer active.
A message, post or payment may belong to one profile while the visible screen shows another.
That may include usernames, email addresses, telephone numbers, profile IDs, display names and linked recovery details.
Several accounts may use similar names, copied photographs or shared contact information.
Provider records and local app artefacts may help distinguish which account was active during a particular event.
Also consider who had access to each account.
One person may control several profiles. Several people may share one profile. A device may contain accounts belonging to different users.
The evidential question should remain precise.
Which account performed the action?
Which device and session were used?
Who controlled that account and device at the relevant time?
The operational takeaway is: one app installation may contain several separate identities. Identify the exact account involved and do not attribute app activity merely from the presence of the software.
What to check or do next¶
- Investigators should record every account identifier that appears relevant.
- Do not rely only on the profile name shown on screen.
Evidential limits¶
This matters because the presence of the app does not identify which account created the activity.
Notifications can also be generated for several accounts and may not make the distinction obvious.
