Mobile Devices & Apps Technical Explainer

Can an app run or communicate in the background?

Yes. Apps can receive messages, refresh content, upload data and contact providers while not visible, subject to permissions, settings, battery controls and operating-system scheduling.

Background triggers create records

Push notifications, network changes, charging and scheduled tasks can create database, location and network events. Work may be delayed until connectivity or power conditions allow it.

Distinguish activity from interaction

Compare foreground-use and unlock records, notifications, timestamps and provider events. A connection can establish that the configured service was active without proving the user opened it or knew the event occurred. Apps can create records without being opened.

Key takeaway

Establish whether an app record came from foreground interaction, background processing or later synchronisation before attributing deliberate use.
