MDA-059 Mobile Devices & Apps

Could app content differ between the device and the provider?

Yes. The content visible on a device may differ from what the provider holds.

What this means

The handset may contain cached, downloaded or synchronised copies.

The provider may hold a newer version, an older version, different metadata or no content at all.

A message may remain locally after it has been deleted from the service.

The provider may retain delivery records after local content disappears.

A draft may exist on the device but never have been uploaded.

A provider account may show content created from another device that has not yet synchronised to the handset.

Timing is one cause of difference.

Offline use, delayed synchronisation, poor connectivity and background restrictions can all create gaps.

User actions also matter.

Editing, deletion, account switching, reinstalling the app or restoring a backup may change one side before the other.

Provider design matters too.

Some services retain central content.

Others rely heavily on device-held data or use end-to-end encryption.

Where the sources conflict, preserve both and explain the difference rather than forcing them into one account.

The operational takeaway is: device and provider records may show different parts or versions of the same activity. Compare them carefully and treat discrepancies as evidence to understand, not simply as errors.

What to check or do next

  • Investigators should not assume that one source is automatically more accurate.
  • Ask what each record represents, when it was created and how synchronisation works.
  • Compare message IDs, timestamps, account identifiers, device sessions and deletion or edit events.
