Does a read receipt prove a person read the message?¶

A read receipt may show that the service recorded the message as opened or viewed.

What this means¶

The account may be used on several devices.

Another person may have opened the conversation.

A preview or automated process may trigger the status in some services.

The device may also have been unlocked and left visible.

Read-receipt behaviour varies between platforms.

Some services mark messages as read when the conversation opens.

Others require the message to be visible.

Users may disable receipts, and linked devices may update the status differently.

A read receipt is stronger than a simple delivered status because it indicates some form of access.

But it remains account or device evidence rather than direct proof of human comprehension.

Replies, reactions, later conduct and message content may provide stronger evidence that the recipient actually understood the communication.

The operational takeaway is: a read receipt supports that the message was accessed within the service, but attribution to a particular person still requires evidence of control, timing and context.

What to check or do next¶

• Investigators should identify which account and device generated the receipt, when it occurred and who had access at that time.
• Do not say “the suspect read it” where the record only shows that the account marked it as read.
