What does a mobile call record actually prove?¶
A mobile call record may show that a call event was associated with particular numbers, devices, subscriptions or network systems at a particular time.
What this means¶
The meaning depends on the source.
A handset call log may record an outgoing, incoming or missed call.
A network-provider record may show routing, connection, duration or billing information.
An app-based calling service may hold separate account and session records.
These sources can differ.
A phone may record an attempted call that never connected.
A provider may record a connected call but not identify who physically used the handset.
A duration may show that the network connection remained open, not that a meaningful conversation took place.
The displayed contact name may come from the local address book rather than a verified subscriber record.
Then ask what event caused the record to be created.
Corroboration may include provider records, recipient-side logs, voicemail, messages, location, CCTV and witness evidence.
The operational takeaway is: a call record proves a technical call event within the limits of the recording system. Attribution, connection, conversation and identity each require separate evidence.
What to check or do next¶
- Investigators should identify the call type, source, time zone, numbers, device identifiers and status.
Evidential limits¶
It does not automatically prove who made the call, what was said or whether the intended person answered.
Do not assume the subscriber or device owner was the caller.
