Mobile Devices & Apps Technical Explainer

What records might a mobile-network provider hold?

The provider may hold subscription, billing, activation, SIM replacement, porting, call, messaging, data-session, device and cell-site records.

Records describe network events

Calls can include numbers, time, routing and duration; SMS records often show an event but not text; data sessions show network use rather than a website or app. IMSI, ICCID and IMEI can link subscription credential and handset.

Request and interpret precisely

Availability varies by provider, service, jurisdiction and retention. Specify identifiers, event and period and preserve where loss is credible. Subscriber data names the account holder, while cell sites and connections identify infrastructure - not exact location or human use.

Key takeaway

Use network records to build the technical subscription and device timeline, then corroborate the person who actually controlled the service.
