Mobile Devices & Apps Technical Explainer

What is the difference between GPS, Wi-Fi and cell-site location?

GPS calculates position from satellites, Wi-Fi positioning compares nearby access points with a location database, and cell-site evidence derives from mobile-network connections.

Precision depends on method and environment

GPS can be precise outdoors but degrades indoors or among obstructions. Wi-Fi can work indoors but relies on accurate, current access-point mapping. Cell sites usually indicate broader areas affected by network conditions.

Combined estimates need source detail

Operating systems often blend satellite, Wi-Fi, cellular and sensors into one estimate. Preserve method, accuracy, timestamp and motion context rather than treating decimal precision as guaranteed accuracy.

Key takeaway

Interpret each location according to its generating method and recorded accuracy, especially where the device reports a blended estimate.
