Could an app record location in the background?¶

Yes. Permissions and operating-system scheduling can let an app collect location while it is not visible.

Background modes vary¶

Navigation, fitness, delivery and safety apps may update continuously, periodically, on movement or at geofence boundaries. Battery policy, settings and connectivity affect frequency; an earlier session may still be active.

Identify the creating event¶

Record permission and app state, source device, collection accuracy and whether the timestamp reflects collection, storage or sync. Compare foreground, screen and provider records. Another linked account session can also generate the history.

Background location shows device or service activity, not that a user deliberately opened the app.
