What are application usage records?¶

They are system or app records describing foreground display, launches, background activity, notifications, data use, battery use or screen time.

Each measure means something different¶

Foreground can show visibility; background may reflect synchronisation. Totals can combine sessions, and records may be short-lived, reset or affected by settings and updates. Time zones and device clocks matter.

Use them to place apps in a timeline¶

Align usage with screen state, unlocks, messages, app databases, provider sessions and notifications. Usage does not identify what occurred inside the app or who controlled a shared or remotely accessed device.
