What can search-history records show?¶
They may preserve a query submitted to a browser, application or service, but not automatically who typed it or why.

Search-history records may show that a query was stored by a browser, search engine, mapping application, shopping service, social platform or another application.
A search term can be highly relevant.
It may reveal interest, planning, knowledge or an attempt to find a person, place or method.
It still needs source and user attribution.
Start by identifying the service.
Was the query recorded in browser history, a search-engine URL, an application database, a cloud account, a keyboard suggestion store or another source?
A phrase appearing in a URL may be a submitted search.
It may also be a recommendation, redirect or copied link.
A search artefact may be stronger when the application database explicitly records it as a user query.
Check the time.
Which field is displayed?
Is it the time the query was submitted, synchronised, cached or later viewed?
Was the timezone converted by the report?
Does the query sit within a sequence of related browser visits, maps, downloads or messages?
The surrounding activity often determines significance.
Account and device context matter.
A browser or search account may synchronise history from several devices.
A shared handset may have several users.
A voice assistant or application may generate a query after speech input.
A copied link may contain another person’s search terms.
An automated process may issue searches in the background.
Don't assume that every query was typed manually on the seized handset.
Spelling and phrasing can still provide useful context.
An unusual misspelling repeated in messages and searches may connect activity.
A query containing knowledge not publicly available may be significant.
A sequence of increasingly specific searches may support planning.
But interpretation should remain fair.
People search for subjects for many reasons.
A query may reflect curiosity, work, research, news, concern for another person or content displayed by somebody else.
The search term alone rarely proves intent.
Check whether the query led to action.
Did the browser visit a result?
Was a file downloaded?
Was a location opened?
Did a message or purchase follow?
Did the user save or share anything?

The artefact may support that an account or application recorded the query.
Intent is a conclusion built from timing, context and subsequent action.
Another mistake is:
“The search is on the phone, so it was typed on that phone.”
Synchronisation may have brought it from another device.
A careful conclusion might say:
“The signed-in browser profile records this search query at this time. The same device then accessed these two result pages and downloaded this file.”
That is a more complete evidential sequence.
Search history can reveal knowledge and activity.
It becomes evidence about a person and purpose only when the account, device and surrounding conduct support that inference.
