What happens when the device timezone changes?

Some records retain a universal instant while others preserve the local clock value or are redisplayed according to the new zone.

Phones can change timezone automatically as they travel.

They can also be set manually.

Apple and Google both provide automatic and manual date, time and timezone settings.

The device may use network information, location services or user selection to decide which zone to display.

Don't assume the timezone at seizure was the timezone used when the artefact was created.

The device may have travelled or been changed manually.

The common mistake is:

“The phone shows 10:00 now, so the historical record happened at 10:00 UK time.”

The application may be redisplaying a UTC event in the current zone.

Another mistake is:

“The time changed by one hour, so the record was altered.”

The difference may result from daylight saving or viewer conversion.

A careful chronology records a common standard such as UTC and, where useful, the relevant local display:

“13:00 UTC / 14:00 BST.”

If the original local timezone is uncertain, mark it rather than guessing.

Timezone changes affect presentation.

Your timeline should preserve the instant and explain the local context separately.
