Does a contact entry prove the person knew that contact?¶

No. It proves that a source stored a label and identifier; it does not automatically prove who created the entry or that a human relationship existed.

Contacts arrive by several routes¶

An entry may be manual, imported from a SIM or old phone, synchronised from a cloud or work directory, created by an app or restored from backup. Identify the address book or account, record state, dates and whether a personalised label is original or inherited.

Use communication to test the association¶

Calls, messages, emails, meetings, payments and matching records on another device can support recognition or a relationship. A stored contact with no interaction may still be a lead, but the label does not verify the real subscriber and can be wrong, historic or deliberately misleading.
