What can Wi-Fi records show?¶
They can show a saved network, observed access point or actual association, each supporting a different relationship between handset, network and place.
Identify configuration, observation or use¶
A remembered SSID may come from an earlier connection, backup, migration or enterprise profile. An observation records nearby radio infrastructure without joining it. Association is stronger and may include BSSID, assigned address, security, start/end or last-connected data. SSIDs are not unique and access points can be replaced or cloned.
Corroborate the access point and time¶
Router/controller records, application traffic and reliable device identifiers can support a connection, allowing for private or randomised Wi-Fi addresses. Location services can observe Wi-Fi without association. Account-synchronised configurations therefore should not be turned into physical presence without contemporaneous local and network evidence.
Key takeaway
State whether Wi-Fi evidence records memory, detection or connection, then corroborate the access point, handset and relevant time.
