What does an application artefact actually show?¶

It shows data generated or stored by a software process and interpreted by the forensic tool, not automatically the whole real-world event suggested by its friendly label.

Find the software meaning¶

Identify application, file/database/log/cache, source fields and whether the record is active, backed up, recovered or carved. The same app may store user input, server responses, synchronisation, configuration, queues, notifications and data imported from another device. Its normal behaviour determines what the field represents.

Scale validation to importance¶

Use surrounding records, device state, provider or participant evidence and account sessions to test the interpretation. A routine lead may need ordinary review; a single disputed location, message or identity may warrant source-level or second-method validation. Keep the conclusion no broader than the recorded process.
