What is a sort code or routing identifier?¶

A sort code or routing identifier helps direct a payment to the correct financial institution or branch within a payment system.

Avoid this assumption: The routing identifier identifies the individual account holder.

A UK sort code usually identifies the bank and branch or processing centre associated with an account. Other countries use routing numbers, clearing codes or similar identifiers.

The routing identifier works together with the account number. It does not normally identify the customer on its own.

The same sort code may be used by many accounts, and modern banking arrangements may not reflect a physical branch in the way investigators expect.

Some digital banks, payment institutions and pooled-account services use centralised or virtual account structures. The routing information may therefore identify the provider rather than the final customer.

Preserve the identifier exactly as displayed. Do not remove leading zeros or alter formatting.

Use it to identify the relevant institution and payment route, but confirm account ownership through provider records.

Where a payment passes through an intermediary or pooled account, the visible routing details may not reveal the final recipient. Additional customer or reference information may be required.

A routing identifier can also assist when records contain incomplete names or when several institutions have similar branding.

Do not infer location from the code without confirmation. The recorded branch or processing centre may not indicate where the account holder lives or where the transaction was made.

When making enquiries, provide the routing identifier, account number, transaction reference, amount, date and time.

Ask the institution whether the account is direct, virtual, pooled or otherwise linked to another service.
