What is a recurring card payment?

A recurring card payment is a repeated payment made under an earlier agreement allowing a merchant to charge the card account again.

Avoid this assumption: The cardholder actively approved each recurring transaction at the time it occurred.

The original setup may have happened during a subscription, membership, trial, instalment plan or continuing service agreement.

Later payments may be merchant-initiated and may not require the cardholder to re-enter the details or complete fresh authentication.

Relevant records may include the original agreement, merchant account, stored credential or token, payment schedule, notification history, transaction references and cancellation request.

A recurring payment can continue after the physical card is replaced if the issuer or payment system updates the stored credential.

The merchant descriptor may also differ from the service name recognised by the customer.

A disputed recurring payment may result from forgotten consent, unclear cancellation, merchant error, account compromise or unauthorised use.

Ask the merchant when and how the authority was created, what terms applied, which account or device was used and whether cancellation was requested.

Ask the issuer or processor whether the payment was classified as recurring or merchant-initiated and what token or stored credential was used.

Preserve both the original setup evidence and each later transaction.

Do not treat the execution time as the time of fresh user action.

Equally, do not assume that an earlier agreement authorised every later amount or change.

Compare the payment history with communications, account access, service use and cancellation records.

When reporting, distinguish the original customer-authorised setup from later merchant-initiated charges.
