PAY-101 Payments & Banking

What is an online payment account?

An online payment account is an account provided by a payment service for sending, receiving, holding or managing money or value.

Avoid the dangerous assumption

The dangerous assumption is that it is simply another bank account with the same records, controls and meanings.

An online payment account may be linked to bank accounts, cards, stored balance, payment handles, merchant accounts or digital wallets.

The provider may hold customer details, account identifiers, linked funding sources, transaction history, login records, devices, sessions, authentication events and risk alerts.

The account may support peer-to-peer payments, online purchases, merchant sales, transfers or currency conversion. Some services also allow funds to remain within the provider before withdrawal.

A balance shown in the service may represent stored value held within the provider rather than money in a separate bank account.

The registered account holder is not automatically the user responsible for every transaction.

The account may be shared, compromised, active on several devices or funded by another person.

Preserve the account email, phone number, user ID, payment handle, transaction references, linked funding sources, device information and status.

Ask the provider how the account was opened, verified, accessed and funded.

Identify whether payments remained internal to the service or moved through banks, cards or other providers.

Internal transfers may not appear as ordinary bank transactions.

When reporting, distinguish the online payment account, funding source, device, session and actual user.

Operational takeaway

Treat an online payment account as its own evidential system and obtain provider account, funding, access and transaction records before drawing conclusions about ownership or control.
