What is a payment handle or payment username?¶
A payment handle or payment username is an identifier used to find or address a user within a payment service.
Avoid the dangerous assumption¶
The dangerous assumption is that the handle is a permanent, verified identity.
A handle may be created by the user, assigned by the provider or linked to an email address or phone number.
It can be memorable and useful for sending payments, but it may not reveal the legal account holder.
Handles can be changed, recycled, impersonated or made to resemble another user.
The display name shown beside the handle may also be user-selected.
Preserve the exact handle, including punctuation, capitalisation, symbols and platform name.
Record where it appeared and the date and time it was observed.
Ask the provider which account held the handle at the relevant time, when it was created or changed and what verified customer information is linked to it.
Do not rely on screenshots alone where the handle may later change.
Compare the handle with account IDs, transaction references, phone numbers, email addresses, device records and communications.
A similar-looking handle may be a different account. Small changes in spelling or symbols can be significant.
Receipt of money at a handle does not prove the registered customer personally controlled the transaction or retained the funds.
When reporting, distinguish the public handle from the provider’s internal account identifier and verified customer record.
Operational takeaway¶
Preserve the payment handle exactly and obtain provider records showing which account controlled it at the relevant time rather than treating the visible name as identity proof.
