What can a cryptocurrency transaction not prove?¶

A cryptocurrency transaction cannot, on its own, prove the identity, intention or location of the person behind it.

Avoid the dangerous assumption¶

The dangerous assumption is that transparent blockchain data removes the need for attribution evidence.

A transaction normally shows addresses, asset movement, network fees, transaction structure and confirmation information.

It does not show a passport, face, physical device or reliable human name.

An address may belong to an exchange, service provider, merchant, smart contract, shared wallet or individual.

The person who initiated the transfer may also differ from the account holder or ultimate beneficiary.

A transaction does not prove that the apparent sender controlled the private key personally.

The activity may have been automated, delegated, compromised or carried out through a custodial provider.

It does not prove the purpose of the payment.

A transfer described as investment, purchase, refund or ransom still requires contextual evidence.

It also cannot reliably prove physical location.

Network activity, exchange logins, devices and communications may assist, but the blockchain record itself is not a location record.

A transaction’s timestamp may not represent the precise moment the user authorised it.

Preserve the blockchain identifiers and then seek exchange, wallet, device, communication and account evidence.

Do not overstate tracing analysis.

Following value to an address identifies the next blockchain destination, not automatically the person who benefited.

When reporting, explain both what the transaction record establishes and what remains unproved.

Treat blockchain transactions as evidence of digital-asset movement, not standalone proof of identity, intent, location, control or ultimate benefit.
