What is a private key?¶
A private key is secret cryptographic information used to control or authorise activity involving a cryptocurrency address or wallet.
Avoid the dangerous assumption¶
The dangerous assumption is that finding a private key automatically proves who created it, who used it or who owned every asset linked to it.
A private key can allow transactions to be signed without asking a bank or exchange for permission.
Anyone who obtains the key may be able to move the associated assets.
For that reason, private keys are highly sensitive evidence and should not be copied, entered into websites or tested casually.
A key may appear as text, a file, a QR code, a hardware-device record or data held within wallet software.
It may also be protected by encryption, a password or secure hardware.
Possession of a private key can support technical control of the linked address at the time of possession.
It does not automatically prove historical control, personal ownership or knowledge of every transaction.
