Does following funds identify the person responsible?

Following cryptocurrency funds can show where value moved on a blockchain, but it does not automatically identify the person responsible.

Avoid the dangerous assumption

The dangerous assumption is that the address receiving the funds belongs to the offender or final beneficiary.

A blockchain trace normally links transactions and addresses.

It may show that value moved to an exchange, wallet service, bridge, mixer, merchant or another unknown address.

That is useful, but each destination remains an infrastructure point until it is attributed through additional evidence.

An exchange deposit address may be linked to a customer account through provider records.

A wallet address may be linked to a device through wallet files, seed material, transaction history or communications.

The person controlling the account may still differ from the registered customer or device owner.

Accounts can be shared, compromised, rented or operated under instruction.

Funds may also pass through intermediaries who are not the organiser or final beneficiary.

Preserve transaction hashes, addresses, asset details, network, amounts, timestamps and provider identifiers at every stage.

Record which links are directly evidenced and which are analytical inferences.

Do not describe an address as belonging to a named person merely because funds reached it.

Likewise, do not assume that the last visible address is the end of the value movement.

Internal exchange transfers, off-chain settlements, cash sales or later conversions may continue the chain.

When reporting, separate blockchain movement, address attribution, account control and personal culpability.
