What is a blockchain bridge?

A blockchain bridge is a service or protocol that allows value or tokens to move between different blockchain networks.

Avoid the dangerous assumption

The dangerous assumption is that the same asset simply travels unchanged from one blockchain to another in one visible transaction.

A bridge usually receives or locks value on one network and releases, creates or recognises corresponding value on another.

The exact mechanism varies. That mechanism determines what event should be sought on each network and which provider may hold supporting records.

Some bridges use smart contracts, custodians, wrapped tokens, liquidity pools or combinations of these.

The movement normally produces separate transaction records on each blockchain.

The investigator must therefore identify the source network, destination network, asset, bridge service and linked transactions.

Preserve transaction hashes on both sides, wallet addresses, token contract addresses, amount, fees, timestamps and any bridge transaction or message identifier.

Funds may appear to stop at the bridge address on the first network while corresponding value emerges elsewhere.

That does not mean the trace has ended.

Do not assume that equal token names represent the same contract or technical asset on both networks.

Also do not assume that the address format or user wallet remains identical across chains.

Bridge interfaces, providers and analytics tools may supply linkage information, but specialist support may be required.

When reporting, distinguish the source-chain transaction, bridge process, destination-chain transaction and any inference connecting them.

Operational takeaway

Trace bridge activity across both blockchains and preserve the bridge, asset, contract and transaction identifiers needed to connect the source and destination movements.
