What is a faster payment?¶
A faster payment is a bank transfer designed for rapid movement between participating accounts. Speed affects preservation and tracing, but does not prove finality, intent or personal control.
Rapid movement still has stages¶
Authorisation, fraud screening, routing and posting can occur even when value appears within seconds or minutes. Sending and receiving records may show different event times. Holds, interventions or later returns remain possible depending on status.
The recipient can move value onward quickly through accounts, cash, exchanges or payment services, making the first destination an urgent evidence source rather than a presumed endpoint.
Preserve and trace promptly¶
Retain transaction ID, reference, status, accounts, amount, times, beneficiary and risk decisions. Establish any provider intervention and follow onward movement.
An account may be shared, compromised or used as a mule. Act promptly where appropriate, while keeping transaction speed separate from proof of criminal purpose or human identity.
The point to remember
Preserve and trace faster-payment records quickly, without turning speed or first receipt into conclusions about intent, control or ultimate benefit.
