What is a beneficiary account?

A beneficiary account is the recorded destination selected for a payment. It may be an intermediary and does not by itself identify the human controller or ultimate beneficiary.

Destination labels can conceal roles

The account might belong to an individual, business, processor, exchange, mule or compromised victim. Names or nicknames may be payer-entered; even a bank name check does not prove transaction-time control.

Beneficiary setup can record account and routing details, date added, channel, endpoint and authentication, making it evidence of preparation as well as destination.

Follow creation and onward movement

Ask the sending bank when and how the beneficiary was added and what warnings appeared. Obtain holder, access, receipt and onward-transfer records from the receiving institution.

Preserve the displayed name and identifiers exactly, but report payment to the account rather than receipt by a named person unless corroborated.

The point to remember

Treat a beneficiary account as the first recorded destination, then prove its controller, onward route and ultimate benefit separately.
