Payments & Banking Technical Explainer

What is a payment reference entered by the customer?

A customer-entered reference is text attached to a transfer to help identification or reconciliation. It records wording supplied or reused, not verified purpose.

The label may be useful without being true

It can contain invoice, surname, message or informal description and link the payment to an order or communication. It can also be mistaken, abbreviated or deliberately misleading. Saved beneficiary details may reuse an older reference automatically.

Do not confuse this field with a provider-generated transaction ID even if the interface gives them similar labels.

Test authorship and meaning

Preserve exact spelling, spacing and punctuation and establish who or which system supplied it and when. Compare invoices, contracts, messages, orders and recipient records. Repeated distinctive values may reveal a pattern.

Report that the account record displayed the reference, leaving its factual purpose to corroborating evidence.

The point to remember

Use customer references as searchable linking clues, while proving their author and claimed payment purpose independently.
